Semaglutide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. While semaglutide can be effective in managing blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, like all medications, it may also have side effects. It’s important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects. Some individuals may experience them to varying degrees of severity.

Common side effects of semaglutide may include:

  1. Nausea and vomiting– Many people who take semaglutide experience mild to moderate nausea, especially when they first start the medication. This usually improves over time as the body adjusts to the drug.
  2. Diarrhea: Diarrhea can occur in some people taking semaglutide, particularly during the first few weeks of treatment.
  3. Injection site reactions: Some individuals may experience redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site.
  4. Gallbladder problems: There have been reports of gallbladder-related side effects, such as gallstones or gallbladder inflammation, in people taking semaglutide.
  5. Thyroid tumors: In rare cases, semaglutide has been associated with an increased risk of thyroid tumors, particularly in rodent studies. However, the significance of this risk in humans is not yet fully understood, and further research is needed.
  6. Pancreatitis: Like some other GLP-1 receptor agonists, there have been rare reports of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) in people taking semaglutide. If you experience severe abdominal pain that doesn’t go away, seek medical attention promptly.

It’s important to follow your physicians guidance when taking semaglutide. He/she can provide information on how to manage potential side effects and monitor your progress.
